Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review 2023 - It Fryed my Brains

Okay, so Assassin's Creed with no swords, bows, axes, or spears seemed like a bad idea to me in 2017, but here I am, being impressed by Carriages, trains and being the batman. Also, many things can put you off once you start playing the game.

The game takes us to the industrial revolution in a very dusty London. The different parts of the city are very well designed. They have a character to themselves; they don't feel lifeless. Ubisoft did a phenomenal job of depicting a suffering London, not only the people but the city itself. The main attraction of the game has to be the river Thames. It is very well done, and the traversal from one side of the Thames to another feels seamless. The story also makes you indulge more deeply in the city of London.

With that being said, let's talk about the story. The main story, sadly, could be more memorable. It's been a month since I played the game, and I only remember parts of the story. The game allows you to play as two main characters, twins Jacob and Evie Frye. Jacob is confrontational, and Evie is stealthy. Although Jacob has more game time than Evie, the story does justice to both characters. What impressed me was the side activities in the game. The Charles Darwin and Dickens stories were extremely fun to uncover. Moreover, the murder mysteries were very well written, and it was always exciting to figure out what happened. It was even more fun to see how the climax of the murder mysteries (nods in Sherlock Holmes).

The game has a lot of things to offer; this is good as well as bad. Good because if you do everything that the game tells you, it will help you explore even the tiny corners of London that you wouldn't go  to ideally. Bad because the game gets very distracting, moving your focus from the main story entirely. This messed up the level system as I found my level way higher than the enemies almost all the time, resulting in a lack of challenging missions.

Discussing the gameplay mechanics, let's talk about the elephant in the room. The game has a very broken parkour system. The same jumps on some buildings is not possible on others. This really hinders the execution of your plans when you are pursuing targets, playing a mission or just free running. The game has a rope launcher, and I understand why Victorian London's setting needed that, but its implementation could have been better. The rope launcher removes all verticality from the game. The buildings feel flat. Even Big Ben can be climbed in seconds. This is something that takes the excitement away from the Parkour system. The rooftops don't feel as exciting as they used to feel in the previous titles. There is no "problem solving" when it comes to parkour. As a player, we are never forced to think about our course of action, which, for me, takes away the feel of Assassin's Creed.

The fighting mechanics are impressive and fun until you are not 5 levels above the opponent. The level system is something that I cannot stand in Assassin's Creed. Oh god, help me; I have to play Origins next. But what took me by surprise was the carriages and trains. When the game came out, I was not a fan of the idea, but I will admit that fighting on top of trains and jumping on different carriages on the run was fun.

Overall, the game was fun to experience, but I wonder if I'll play it again. So that was that that is how Assassin's Creed Syndicate was for me.
